Old Dominion University Mechanical Engineering Technology Granby High School Outreach Program
While at ODU I was a student adviser for this outreach program. The purpose of this program was to open communication between current university student and high school students seeking higher education in the STEM disciplines.
I was able to provide a few services to the students:
Mentored students in the use of basic electrical components as well as wiring prototypes using a breadboard.
Taught basic code and programming skills using the Arduino and Parallax environments.
Showed comprehensive problem solving skills.
Gave them advise on gathering information and research.
Discussed possible higher education paths and the paths to get there.
Encouraged STEM learning and occupational pursuits.
In the end I truly enjoyed this experience and it showed me that I have the skills to communicate with people of a different background from myself, that I enjoy teaching as much as I do learning, and that I am good at working in groups to accomplish a goal whether it be as a member or in the lead.
